[Time Sensitive] Want advice on your style?

Carrie Montgomery Blog - Step Into Successful Style Webinar

Sister,

Remember the last time you looked in the mirror and said, “Oh boy, if I rubbed that Buddha belly, my wish would be to lose 10 lbs!” We expand, contract, but we’re always living inside our bodies. (Until, we’re not.)

It’s easy to run from it. To shop for a fleeting high, stuff your face with chips and guac (or pumpkin pie), to drink one more glass of wine, to forget. But, is it easy to let out a long, hard sigh and relax into your body instead? To accept it as it is?

My clients think so after using the Somatic Dressing Method™.

It’s their daily embodiment dressing process.

It’s not about how you look, but accommodating how you feel. In every moment, you get to present yourself, as you need. It’s so freeing!

You strive to feel comfortable, confident, and connected to your core. I know, I do it. Sometimes I fail, but I always come back to this process each day I get dressed. Why not make getting dressed a fun, transformative experience, so you can easily identify your needs for the day and swaddle them in clothes that support your mood.

One thing that happens to us is we AGE. Oh, the thought of wrinkles, grey hair, sagging bums with cellulite as we may slow down our exercise routines. In the United States, aging is thought to be a negative experience, but to be ageless is to enjoy your body at every stage.

That’s part of why I moved to Spain. To find a new sense of agelessness. An even more integrated rhythm than one in Maine, one that resonated with me on a cellular level. Really, it’s more like my cells are doing the happy dance every day, even when shit goes wrong or gets mega delayed.

When we age, our shape changes, our energy shifts, our perspectives refocus. Wisdom comes more fluidly as life becomes complex and our values become more paramount. The support you need to live the lifestyle you desire takes work.

The key to ageless style is being timeless with your identity.

Aligning your lifestyle, your body image, and your body shape raises your vibration. You start speaking from the heart and people are attracted to YOU. There’s no program on the market that brings the lens of lifestyle, personal development, and aesthetics together to embody your experience of self. Also known as your Style Archetype.

As you go through The Somatic Dressing Method™, you end up showing up with your inner strength on fire. Instead of insecure and afraid, you’re present with your shoulders back and head held high EXCITED to share your message with the world. Adorning your version of “the power suit.” Or, you’re taking a moment restoring in the clothes that soothe and rejuvenate your body, so you can take the next big leap in your business or life.

Dressing to empower your state of being is revolutionary.

It’s no longer needing to fit into the 36-24-36 hourglass ideals society forces on us women, nor is it about having a perfectly sculpted slender figure that we see in the Hollywood. It’s about accepting what is and trusting your ability to serve yourself… through clothing.

I developed a style formula to help you align your inner warrior with your newfound confidence. It’s called: the Somatic Dressing Method™, I use it in my signature program, Create Your Soul Style.

Making a Statement of You

Making a Statement of You Blog CarrieMontgomery.com

Hey, Beauty!

With the new year almost here (scary right?!?!), it’s time to give your business & style a promotion! Creating a statement wardrobe helps you step up your business game and get noticed.  There’s truth to the phrase “dress for success,” and you, my friends, are made for success.

How do you know it’s time to take the leap? Keep reading.

First things first. Every good statement starts with a good foundation.

What Makes a Good Foundation Wardrobe?

Comfort. Comfort brings confidence. You must be comfortable with your basic go-to clothes before we create a statement. These are your bread and butter, your must-haves, your happy place.

A foundation wardrobe includes:

  • 2 pairs of jeans: A combination of ripped, clean, skinny, bootleg, flare, or high-waisted – whatever is you.

  • 2 pairs of dress pants

  • 3-4 sweaters: Stick to your neutral colors (black, brown, white, grey)

  • 3-4 button-down shirts or dress shirts

  • 6 t-shirts

  • 3-4 dresses

  • 2-3 coats

  • 2 workout pants

  • 10 pairs of underwear

  • 2 bras

  • 2 boots

  • 2 heels

  • 2 sneakers – one pair for working out, one for casual

  • 2 flats

Be sure these are high-quality pieces. These are clothes that will go the distance with you. They’re worth investing in.

I’m gonna be honest, it was hard for my fashionista to follow these rules while packing for my move to Spain.  But, I used the checklist as a filter and guideline, so that I didn’t overpack.

If you’re not sure how to begin building your colors and styles, check out how to build a Pinterest Style board here.

Bring On the Statement!

Once the high-quality foundation pieces are in place, it’s time to add the sugar and spice. Throw a statement piece in the mix. This might look like layering patterns, textures, or accessories on your foundation. Pair a black shirt and jeans with a statement blazer and heels and head out the door!

How do you know what statement is truly you? Keep your Style Archetype in mind. What fits with your personal brand and the direction you want to go?

Pro tip: Statement pieces come and go as trends change. Unless a statement piece is essential to who you are, you don’t have to spend a lot of money on it. I always recommend buying statement pieces at a fast fashion rate when you know it’s not a piece you’ll keep forever. But, when it’s something you want to stand the test of time, like a leather jacket or great boots, go for QUALITY!

Upgrade Your Style, Upgrade Your Life

When will you know it’s time to step up? You may never be 100% sure, but there will come a now-or-never moment when you’re like, “I’ve just got to do this.” So, do it! You work hard and opportunities keep coming your way. Jump on board, take the plunge, and hold onto that super cute statement hat!

Things to Remember

Hire a stylist or invest in style education. Since this is your  make-or-break moment, a stylist can help you create a capsule wardrobe of basics and pick out some beautiful statement pieces. When you can’t decide what statements you need, it’s time to invest in someone to push you past your edge a little. .

So, what are you waiting for? Your personal brand and your career are ready. Lead the way in style!

You have two options:

#1: Go it alone and get started with the steps in this email. Start building the vision with my Pinterest Worksheet. This option is great if you’re a DIY-er.

#2: Let me lead you towards personal transformation. Book a time to chat. This option is best if you like 1:1 support.

Either route will work once you 100% commit.

Let’s make a statement of you!

Love,

Carrie

Clearing Your Closet to Make Room for the New You

Clearing Your Closet to Make Room for the New You Blog CarrieMontgomery.com Closet Cleanse

Clutter = chaos, right?

If you have no clue what’s in your closet, you have no idea what to wear. You may open the door and find that 15-year old sweatshirt that holds a few memories from your ex.

We all know that your clothes define your core style and branding. So, it makes sense to examine our wardrobes when we’re mapping out how to conquer the next step in business.

The process of removing items from your closet that are holding you back is how you create space for who you want to become. We all have a past. It’s an important chapter of our lives, but it doesn’t have to be the deciding factor on who we’re going to be in the future.

When you’re tackling a closet cleanse, the most important thing to remember is this: Who do you want to be?

When I work with clients, I try to uncover exactly where she’s put the most effort in her life. That’s where I can begin to understand her story. We face the same problems over and over, just in different guises. The challenge here is to take a closer look at the past and find a theme. We have to acknowledge the past in order to move forward. Otherwise, it’ll keep you stuck in the same place and that’s not the look you’re going for.

When we see the past neutrally, we can see the present with clearer vision. When you’re present with the moment you’re in right now, then you can step into where you want to be.

Step-by-Step: My Best Tips for Creating a Style that Fits You Now

First things first. Get a piece of paper or your journal and write down the vision of who you are and what you want from your life. Remember to consider what you’re wearing, how you interact with others, and how you show up in the world.

Your style and closet should be a reflection of that vision. It’s a manifestation of what’s going on inside. Like when I moved to Spain, I was conscious of what would work for the lifestyle, climate, my body image, and body shape. You have to be efficient when moving to another country and only taking what you love and works together!

Create a clean slate in your closet. Creating an environment that supports this vision of your true self will ultimately make it easier to reach your goals.

Things to remember: My advice on what to keep and get rid of differs drastically from what many other people recommend. It’s a good idea to physically remove every single item from your closet. Touching these garments helps you evaluate or dismiss any value they might have.

Permission to keep: As much fun as it would be to get rid of everything and really start fresh, that’s just not practical. You have to know when a piece is harming or helping your vision. As I packed my belongings into boxes that I wouldn’t see for awhile, I know these items were still part of my persona, but couldn’t make it to Spain.  It’s OK to keep some items that are near and dear, just not clutter.

Get rid of: Anything ripped, stained, yellowed, or looks tattered - think about it this way – what you keep is on a subconscious level of how you really feel about yourself. No one wants to think badly about themselves, so toss the trash and move on. You can keep those perfectly ripped jeans or the tee shirt that compliments the rocker look!

Consider carefully: Clothes that don’t fit are a touchy subject. On one hand, it’s not ideal to keep clothes that really don’t fit. But, if they’re close to fitting and you occasionally can fit into them, maybe it’s a good idea to keep a few pieces. Of course, you should get rid of them if the clothes make you feel badly about yourself.

If you haven’t worn it in a year: It makes sense to hold onto certain investment pieces. But, if you have a closet full of ball gowns and you haven’t been to a ball in a decade, it’s time to rethink their purposes. Sell them and let someone else enjoy the beauty of the garment.

Finally, fill in any missing gaps in your closet.

Making financial goals for your business is only half the equation when you’re trying to become the best possible version of yourself. You have to think about what you’re putting on your body, and how the fabric and fit affects your energy. It’s KEY to how you’re showing up in the world. A closet overhaul is really the best place to start as you step into your higher self. So ask yourself, how do you want to align yourself with your goals and vision?

My Clients Aren’t Bullied by Their Size

Why My Clients Aren't Bullied by Their Size Blog CarrieMontgomery.com

Walk into three different department stores and chances are, you’ll “be” three different sizes.

What a mental trip. Seeing the number 8, then 6, then 10 on the tag can be devastating for many women, because we subconsciously believe that our value and worth depends on our size.

Often, we’ll flee the store feeling like we’re less than, because nothing fits the way we expect it to. It puts us in a crappy mood.

Of course, it’s impossible for you to be three different sizes, so what size are you??

Enter: The Kinda-Sorta Fit - a flaw of modern day fashion… AKA FAST FASHION.

Sadly, this kind of experience happens all the time with my clients. One woman was so frustrated, because she thought she knew her size. Yet, in the dressing room, she had to try on piles of clothes in various sizes. Leaving her feeling confused.

Remember: the self-esteem you’re cultivating by creating a signature style has NOTHING to do with the number on the tag. Sure, it’s important to know your size, but be okay with the fact that you might be an 8 in one store, a 6 in another, and a 4 somewhere else (we call it, the range). Sizing doesn’t just mean the number on the tag – it depends on how the manufacturer cuts clothing.

Your size does not equal your worth.

Please don’t feel bad about your body when you try on clothes, because the difference in size is not a reflection of your value. It’s just a system to measure cloth.

Have you seen the show, This is Us? Kate wants to fit into a size seven. The way the scene is shot leads us think that it won’t fit, because she’s so accustomed to feeling bad about her body. Her character doesn’t know how to feel good about her shape. So, she couldn’t wear the dress that actually fit her at a size seven and instead reinforced the negative body image and tried on a size five.

Guess what? Clothes aren’t made to fit you.

We kind of get lost in that idea that I’m a size 8 and all size 8 pants and dresses should fit, right? When they don’t fit, it’s so easy to get stuck in a loop of negative self-talk. Standing in your underwear with those awful bright lights in the dressing room.

But, here’s the problem with mass-produced fashion:

The clothes aren’t made to fit your body perfectly; they’re made to kinda-sorta fit everyone.

I know. It sounds too simple to be true. Just think about it.

There’s no template for all clothing manufacturers to use anymore. The sizing system was created to mass-produce clothing, so they can sell the most pieces. Since there’s only one of you, there’s no way a garment right off the rack is going to fit perfectly.

Before the Industrial Revolution, most people didn’t have a ton of clothes. The pieces they had were created specifically for them, which means they rocked each look because they were tailor made!

I can’t tell you how often women ask me for style advice (like everywhere I go).  I get it, you want to look good and feel good, but you can’t find a pair of jeans that doesn’t give you muffin top and still fit your hips and legs.  We call this an apple shape, because the midsection is much smaller than the hips.

I always say “go up in size… fit the widest part of you and let your tailor take in the rest.”

Finding a tailor you love and trust is key to looking your best. So, is learning how to shop for your shape. Both steps are crucial to making sure that what you’re buying is going to flatter your body.

This is your chance to relish in the fact that there’s no one like you! When you alter clothing to fit your shape, you’re owning and claiming the piece as yours, right? Since we all know that once you’ve decided on your style; you’ve taken the first step to authenticating your true self, this is something that just has to happen. It’s a key part of the process.

And wow. If that’s not empowering, I don’t know what is!

How to Use Style Micro-Manifestations to Get What You Want

Carrie Montgomery How to Use Style Micro-Manifestations to Get What You Want Blog CarrieMontgomery.com

Do you wake up with a million things to do, mind racing while running out the door? You might be a slow to roll gal taking your time to get out of bed with a meditation and writing practice as your morning routine?

I love to check in with my body. It sets the tone for the day for me, so I know how to treat myself. I don’t want to find myself with the foot on the gas pedal when my tank is empty.

Adjusting my style lens… the spectacles that I look at my body with has been revolutionary for me and my clients.

I like to start my day with something I call, Micro-Manifestations. It’s a way of listening to your inner voice. These manifestations end up making you look and feel good when you show up to the yoga mat or a Discovery Call. When you’re in the right mindset, the world is yours. You can magnetize whatever you want.

This is a perfect time to start putting these manifestations into place. You are primed and ready for change like the leaves changing colors.

How to Use Style Micro-Manifestations to Get What You Want

It begins with knowing how you want to feel. Then you can use style to create those feelings NOW. The best part? All of this information is already inside you. Just close your eyes and listen. Ask your body what it needs?

When you’re present, big changes can happen on the smallest levels.

Cue that email pining your inbox asking you to speak at your dream event.

Here the phone ring inviting you to take the lead at work.

Bump into a friend at the market who’s been on your mind for weeks.

These manifestations start with the most basic choices and stretches outward far beyond your outfit choices.

When you meet the needs of your body on a micro-manifestation level, it sets in motion a cascade of positive events. Adorn and serve your body, because this allows you to open the door to something greater. You can activate that greatness, because you have a super strong foundation in place.

Even if you don’t know what you want right now, by just focusing on these micro-manifestations, you’ll get there. Sounds crazy, but it’s true. You'll be shown the way and because you’re listening to your body and giving her what she needs, this allows you to RECEIVE.

Know that old saying, “Fake it till you make it?” It sort of applies here, too. Except this isn’t just your outfit – it’s your energy and emotions.

Here’s How This Process Works:

When you magnify your soul, the world can see you without the chaos created from your mind. Without insecurities clouding your world, it’s a clear, direct filter to your energy.

Basically, cast yourself in the role of your vision. See yourself selling your idea to the world and feel them getting excited about it. You can sell that vision because you believe in yourself. It’s an inner and outer manifestation. It sounds crazy, right? Way too simple. But trust me, it works.

Let’s Work Through an Example:

You need to feel: CONFIDENT THAT YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING:

Type of situation: Job Interview, Getting on Stage, Sales Conversation

Step 1: Where are you feeling fear, anxiety, or unease in your body around this upcoming situation? Often people experience fear in the stomach.

Step 2: Pick an article of clothing that will give you support and reinforcement in this area of your body. For example: high-waisted pants or a wide belt.

Step 3: Ask yourself where do you feel love in your body? When you’re a heart-centered person and you start projecting your passion and love, that energy is going to be communicated out into the world.

Step 4: Pick an article of clothing or piece of jewelry to enhance the feeling of passion. You can enhance that area either by using a piece of jewelry or by wearing a deep V-neck, which would help you signal to the world that you’re energetically embracing self-love. It’s a small micro-manifestation. It almost makes you overly conscious of the need to project love. Look for something to enhance and highlight the heart area.

Step 5: Add a comfort layer that you can decide to shed when it’s time or keep on depending on how you feel in the moment. You can wear a really high-quality cashmere wrap sweater or wrap your body in a way that it feels safe and protected. It’s okay to toe the line here a bit. I mean, we can’t always walk around in performance mode. It’s not sustainable. Instead go with the flow of your cycle and seasons. Knowing when to serve your body, so that you can get to that next level is super important. Everyone's going to feel vulnerable and nervous. It's okay to have an extra layer, and then right before you get on stage, you take that layer off. We want to see you!

Step 6: Show up and shine. Release and receive. You’ve dressed the part, supported your energy, and now it’s time to let the energy do the rest.

Every day we have a choice. We choose how we adorn our bodies. We choose what we’re going to project. Micro-manifestations seem like really small actions, but when you start using them on a daily basis, you’ll be amazed at the results. It’s as if what you begin to project to the world is completely refreshed. You feel stronger, fiercer, clearer.

This, my love, is The Somatic Dressing Method™.  It’s about consciously stepping into your body to meet its needs, so you can shine. It’s the foundation for my signature program, Create Your Soul Style.  Grab your Top Ten Tips to Revolutionize Your Style to start getting what you want.
